Trailer Light Install/Repair

Trailer light issues are relatively common, but straight-forward to troubleshoot and resolve. Boat trailers, open utility trailers, enclosed trailers, goose-neck trailers use a series of standard wires and configurations. Boat trailer lights are immersed every time you put your boat in or take it out of the water, so keeping your waterproof connections waterproof is vital (especially where salt water is concerned). Common Trailer Lighting Problems:

• Brake lights or running lights don’t work
• Turn signals flash rapidly or not at all
• Running lights won’t come on at night
• One side works, the other doesn’t
• Dead or broken running lights
• All trailer lights completely dead

Common Wiring Problems:

• Frayed or broken wires underneath the trailer
• Wires damaged by road debris
• Rodent-chewed wiring while the trailer was in storage
• Corroded or green wire connections, water immersion issues
• Loose ground wire causing intermittent operation
• Damaged wiring after backing into brush or a boat ramp

Plug and Connector Issues:

• Need to upgrade from a flat connector to a round connector
• 4-pin or 5-pin connector broken
• Corroded pins or connector
• Water intrusion/corrosion inside the plug or connector
• Loose or wiring causing intermittent light function
• Wrong connector for the tow vehicle

Need a trailer lighting kit for your vehicle? No problem. I generally recommend a “combo” plug that has a 5-way connector (important for larger trailers with trailer brakes) as well as a flat plug for smaller trailers on the same bracket. These give you the flexibility of using a much wider variety of trailers and take about the same amount of time to install.
